Upcoming Events: Revitalize YOUR Education

The California Master Plan for Higher Education was developed in 1960 to establish the three tiers of higher education in California: The UC, the CSU, and the CCC.

The Master Plan originally dictated:
– The mission for California public institutions of higher education
– That California higher education be a public service and a public good
– That there should be equal access for Californians to higher education
– That higher education in California should be FREE

We have deviated far from this model. So what went wrong? Our Forum’s aim to address this question and explore possible solutions.

In January 2014, UC President Janet Napolitano expressed her openness in re-evaluating the Master Plan and working with leaders in higher education across the state to better serve students. In her press release, she said: “We must look at the Master Plan today in terms of how we collaborate, how we cooperate…. always with the education of the next generation in mind.”

This Forum aims to educate and start a discussion on what the California Master Plan is, its current state of ineffectiveness, and what we as UCSB students would want to see out of a revitalized Master Plan.

There will be a panel of experts who will help inform discussion and answer questions, including:
– Harrison Weber, UCSB alumnus and former A.S. President 2011-2012
– Professor Chris Newfield, a UCSB professor and expert in the field of higher education
– Professor Jon Sonstelie, an economics professor with a focus on public education
